Digital Television Switch impasse creating uneven broadcast sector ,Nairobi,Kenya
Written by Anthony Aisi
The migration from analogue to digital broadcast in Kenya has witnessed unprecedented push and shove as stakeholders among them Communication Authority and ICT ministry on one hand race against time to roll out the crucial exercise before the June 17 2015 global deadline while three media houses on the other hand call for a distribution license. The latest twist in a process that has been moved on several occasions before has seen eight local channels switch off their analogue broadcasts and are currently only available on the digital platform in compliance with the regulator’s demands to have the analogue signals switched off effective 1st January 2015 whereas three other channels continue to broadcast on both analogue and digital platforms pending the hearing of the suit filed at the Supreme Court. Advertising revenue is the mainstay of most media stations which is billed based on their audience reach, the analogue switch off for the eight broadcast stations that have complied has put them at a disadvantage as their reach in Nairobi and its environs is now limited to the households that have acquired the type approved set top boxes whereas the three who are yet to switch get undue advantage given that they are accessible in households that continue to use analogue technology as well as those that have acquired the set top boxes. The continued impasse has equally eroded the public’s confidence in the process thereby developing a wait and see attitude as the Global deadline fast approaches, thisleaves the country with lesser time to prepare for the switch while running the risk of having a last minute rush closer to the deadline.Stakeholders have made strategic efforts to address potential challenges which has seen previous opponents of the transition such as Consumer Federation of Kenya (COFEK) now in fully support of the digital migration process. Consumer awareness on the transition from analogue to digital broadcasting has been heightenedwith Kenyans nowaware of the actions to take to continue accessing television after analogue switch off which explains why despite the standoff, over 1 million set top boxes have been sold in Nairobi alone and with the signal coverage currently standing at over 70% of the country on the digital terrestrial technology and 100% on satellite technology, the country is ready to transition and enjoy the benefits that accrue from digital television. Transition to promote competition in the broadcast sector The migration process presents exciting times ahead in the broadcast sector as it presents room for growth in the numberof free to air channels available as the transition will free up the bandwidth to allow more broadcast channels in the process promising unprecedented content variety in Kenyan households. The next battlefront will then be content development, with the audience reach being even thanks to the uniform digital television signal distribution across the country, broadcasters will have to appeal to their audience and grow their viewership by offering relevant, educative and entertaining programming. With the growth in the number of broadcast channels and the quest to have premium content, comes employment creation through independent content developers who will have a ready market to absorb local productions, further growing the current and upcoming rich creative talent available in Kenya. In the end, the Government will also have successfully met the treaty as agreed upon with International Telecommunication Union (ITU) while at the same time setting up a robust media industry and growing the public’s education levels through increased access to information both in urban and rural areas. With the successful migration to the digital platform, the freed spectrum spacewill be utilized by mobile operators to improve their networks, this will fast-track the adoption of 4th Generation technology in the country. The technology is expected offer high-speed wireless services as consumers use tablet computers and smartphones more to surf the web. As a country, Kenya is known to adapt fast to technological advances and digital television should not be an exemption. Human Rights : Fidels Nshombo's Story(Human Rights Book Club)
An Amazing Journey
How does someone survive more than a decade on the run, alone in Africa? Why should a 12 year old have to spend the next 11 years of his life running from adults who meant to harm him? How does such a person find the courage to survive and the hope that someday he will know a different life? Meet Fidel Nshombo. Fidel is 26 years old and he lives in Boise, Idaho. He has known 3 years of peace in the United States. In that time he has worked hard to heal the wounds of his past – wounds resulting from being separated from his parents and siblings for more than a decade; wounds resulting from constant threats of violence; wounds resulting from a constant lack of sustenance; wounds resulting from a life in harm’s way and no foreseeable way out. The wounds were many and the wounds were deep. Healing has been hard, but Fidel has known a hard life, and he is up to difficult challenges.
Fidel is a great role model for young and old. He has held a good job since he arrived in Boise, working for the Doubletre Hotel as a Night Auditor. Fidel spends many hours helping new refugees to Boise understand how to succeed in life here. He brings his amazing soccer talent to several local teams throughout the year, and he shares his journey of courage and hope with Boise students so that they may better understand life on the African continent, and the challenges of being a refugee in America.
In 2008 Fidel learned that he had family members alive in Africa. His family’s journey has been dramatic, just like his. Get to know his family members through this website and consider helping them survive as refugees (needing food, shelter healthcare and education) until they can be relocated and offered a self-sustaining future.

Low-risk 'worm' removed at hacked South Korea nuclear operator
By Meeyoung Cho
SEOUL Tue Dec 30, 2014 4:18am EST (Reuters) - South Korean authorities have found evidence that a low-risk computer "worm" had been removed from devices connected to some nuclear plant control systems, but no harmful virus was found in reactor controls threatened by a hacker.
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co Ltd said it would beef up cyber security by hiring more IT security experts and forming an oversight committee, as it came in for fresh criticism from lawmakers following recent hacks against its headquarters.
The nuclear operator, part of state-run utility Korea Electric Power Corp, said earlier this month that non-critical data had been stolen from its systems, while a hacker threatened in Twitter messages to close three reactors.
The control systems of the two complexes housing those reactors had not been exposed to any malignant virus, Seoul's energy ministry and nuclear watchdog said in a joint statement on Tuesday, adding the systems were inaccessible from external networks.
Energy Minister Yoon Sang-jick told a parliamentary session that evidence of the presence and removal of a "worm" - which the ministry said was probably inadvertently introduced by workers using unauthorized USB devices - was unrelated to the recent hacking incidents, drawing scepticism from some lawmakers.
"I doubt control systems are perfectly safe as said," Lee Jung-hyun, a lawmaker in the ruling Saenuri party, told the committee hearing.
Worries about nuclear safety in South Korea, which relies on nuclear reactors for a third of its power and is the world's fifth-largest nuclear power user, have mounted since the 2011 Fukushima disaster in Japan and a domestic scandal in 2012 over the supply of reactor parts with fake security certificates.
"We will prepare fundamental improvement measures by enhancing nuclear power's safe operation and hiking information security systems to the highest level following this cyber attack case," Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power said in a statement.
Seoul prosecutors have not ruled out possible involvement of North Korea in the cyber attack on the nuclear operator, which Pyongyang has denied.
Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power President and CEO Cho Seok told the hearing that all control systems of the country's 23 nuclear reactors were safe against malignant codes. On Sunday, he said that cyber attacks on non-critical operations at the company's headquarters were continuing, although he did not elaborate for security reasons.
The nuclear plant operator said on Tuesday it was increasing the number of staff devoted to cyber security from 53 to around 70, and would set up a committee of internal and external experts to oversee security.
Chun Soon-ok of the opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy party said: "The government's nuclear power policies have lost people's trust and whatever broke out only makes people concerned more."

Comedian Cosby was a bully during his Youth, another woman has come forward to accuse him
Yet another woman has come forward to accuse Bill Cosby of drugging and possibly taking advantage of her.
On an episode of "Dr. Phil" airing on Friday, the talk show had seven of Cosby's accusers for guests, including a woman who was identified only as Lisa who said that she was drugged by the famous comedian more than two decades ago.
Lisa had built a friendship with Cosby after being called to audition for him when she was a model in the 1980s.
"I was very excited to go and see him," Lisa told Dr. Phil. "I was starstruck. I felt invincible. I couldn't believe that he wanted to see me."
© Provided by TheWrap New Cosby Accuser Says She Blacked Out for 2 Days After Comedian Drugged Her (Video) she said the famous comedian was "respectful and kind."
On another visit, he allowed Lisa, 21 years old at the time, to bring her mother and sister along.
"My mother trusted Bill completely," she said. "I trusted him like I trusted my own father."
That allegedly changed when she visited Cosby at his hotel suite for a career mentoring session. She said he gave her two drinks despite her refusals, which he insisted would help her acting.
"I noticed myself getting a little dizzy," she said. "Bill had sat down on the edge of the couch. He said, 'Come over here and have a seat.' And he had his legs open and when I sat down, I was sitting down in between his legs with my back to his crotch. And he started to stroke my hair back in a petting motion like this. The last thing I remember is just feeling the strokes on my head. After that, I don't remember anything else."
Lisa said she didn't remember anything until waking up back at home two days later.
The new accuser joins more than 20 other women who have said that Cosby drugged and/or sexually assaulted them. They include former supermodels Beverly Johnson and Janice Dickinson.
In recent days, Cosby's family had been rallying around him, including his wife and daughter.
As a result of the allegations, Cosby's comedy project with NBC was killed and Netflix pulled a stand-up special it had planned to premiere on Thanksgiving. Additionally, dozens of performances on his current standup tour have been canceled.
Cosby previously defended his refusal to comment, telling Florida Today in November, "I know people are tired of me not saying anything, but a guy doesn't have to answer to innuendos. People should fact check. People shouldn't have to go through that and shouldn't answer to innuendos."
In the wake of the mounting allegations, attorney Marty Singer previously released a statement saying: "The new, never-before-heard claims from women who have come forward in the past two weeks with unsubstantiated, fantastical stories about things they say occurred 30, 40, or even 50 years ago have escalated far past the point of absurdity."
